Linssed Oil
Scientific name: Linum usitatissimun
Part used: Seeds with husks
From: Asia
Linseed oil has an orange color and slightly bitter taste. As a notable antioxidant and immune system stimulant it prevents degenerative and cardiovascular diseases. It presents excellent results in the treatment of premenstrual tension and menopause and it is important for the reduction of breast, prostate and lung cancer risks.
This oil also contains lignin, a phytoestrogen that replaces the natural estrogen, a sex hormone, which suffers an abrupt drop during menopause. Lignin is also a precursor of the enterodiol and enterolactona hormones.
For people who do not like omega-3 originating from fish oil, Flaxseed oil is an excellent alternative.
It has the following composition of essential fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid or omega-3 (55%), linoleic acid or omega-6 (14.5%) and oleic acid or omega-9 (18.6%).
The balance between the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids improves the production of prostaglandins, which are biologically active compounds important for a great range of functions within the organism. They are present in all cells and are formed from the mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. They participate in the maintenance of hormonal balance processes, inhibition of abnormal cell proliferation, blood pressure regulation, cholesterol synthesis inhibition, inhibition of inflammation and activation of white blood cells. The ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is approximately 1:4. In Linseed oil, there is a ratio of l:3.5, which is very close to the ideal.
In the cosmetic and pharmaceutical manipulation industries, Linseed oil has been used for the treatment of eczema, acne and atopic dermatitis, as it has excellent skin healing properties.
The recommended daily dose is from 5 to 10 grams , the equivalent of 1 dessertspoon full per day. Each gram of oil has the equivalent of 9 calories.
Due to the high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, Linseed oil must be kept in the refrigerator after opening.
This product can be taken, in moderate daily doses, by both adults and children alike.
